Back Pain During Pregnancy

During pregnancy it is not uncommon for women to experience back, hip and leg pain. Some women can experience a totally pain free pregnancy and it is estimated that between 50% and 80% of women experience some form of back pain during pregnancy. Pain levels can range from mild pain associated with specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain during pregnancy if not properly addressed.

Studies show that frequently lower back pain in pregnancy occurs as the mother is heading into the third trimester when a hormone called Relaxin is released.  This hormone allows the ligaments in the birth canal to expand and the surrounding structures to shift. In some cases, pain in the lower back can begin as early as 8 to 12 weeks when the center of gravity begins to change and ligamentous structure begin to alter.  Women with pre-existing lower back problems are at higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in the pregnancy.  When a woman’s body begins to change during pregnancy, pre-existing spinal misalignments have a tendency to get worse. Neck and mid-back pain is also not uncommon. Most women respond very well to upper cervical chiropractic during pregnancy--conditions like sciatica, back and neck pain, digestive issues and headaches are just a few of the conditions that pregnant women see very positive result. The body’s master control system is comprised of the brain and nervous system, protected by the skull and spine. When the vertebras in the spine are out of alignment, it can cause the body to not function optimally and stress the body.

Foresight Chiropractic Wellness Center cares for women experiencing back pain during pregnancy. The doctors are Board Certified Atlas Orthogonist, practicing a very gentle and precise upper cervical chiropractic technique. No popping or cracking of the neck or body. Getting regular chiropractic adjustments before and during pregnancy can relieve neck or back pain for the mother—naturally and gently—that may result from weight gain and due to the biomechanical changes during pregnancy.  More importantly, mother and baby benefit from chiropractic adjustments by improving or maintaining alignment and balance of the spine and pelvis.  This can help with an easier, healthier pregnancy and delivery for Mom and baby.   Chiropractic adjustments can help the baby assume an optimal birthing position, reducing the risk of having a breech birth or a delivery requiring the use of instruments such as forceps or vacuum extraction.

The doctors have been serving women with back pain during pregnancy, newborns, children and the elderly for over 15 years. Natural, gentle and precise chiropractic care promotes optimal health for the entire family.  Call 480-325-6977 for a free consultation or attend one of our free community wellness workshops.
