Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, auto-immune disease where the body's immune system attacks the body. RA is characterized by chronic inflammation that destroys joints, tissues and organs over time.  People with RA can experience swelling in the hands, fingers, toes and feet.  Often, patients will be prescribed drugs such as Methotrexate and Prednisone that frequently includes negative side effects.

Chiropractic care offers an inexpensive, low risk, non-invasive alternative for the treatment of RA.  Studies have shown that specific chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitation exercises can help lessen the symptoms of RA.  This is because most sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis will have subluxations (misalignments of the spine) throughout the spine – and chiropractic specifically treats subluxations to remove nervous system interferences and imbalances.

Subluxation of the spine causes irritation of nerve pathways, affecting organ systems of the body. Chemical, Emotional and Physical Stress such as birth trauma, falls, whiplash and poor posture, diet are some of the known causes of subluxation. This physical nerve stress leads to altered immune function and increased susceptibility to a number of diseases.

Subluxation also contributes to chronic inflammation in the body.  Proper nerve stimulation is essential for the growth, function and control of inflammatory cells. Research has noted that abnormal neurological control results in the development of inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Patents with RA also can have cervical curvature that presents as a forward head shift. Research shows that forward head posture can add a significant amount of abnormal leverage that can pull the entire spine out of alignment.  It can also restrict normal respiration processes.  Posture problems can result in a significant loss of vital lung capacity, which alters immunological control in the body.

Chiropractors who are focused on wellness-based care will perform a detailed analysis of the spine to locate areas of subluxation. Specific corrective chiropractic adjustments will be given to reduce the subluxation and restore normal function to the nervous system.   Studies have shown that when adjustments are applied to a subluxated area, the white blood cell count rises in patients.  Other studies have confirmed that specific adjustments of the upper cervical spine and improvements in posture have a major effect on normalizing immune function.
