Atlas Adjustment

Health is defined by Stedman’s medical dictionary as, “the state of the organism when it functions optimally without evidence of disease or abnormality.”  Health is all systems in balance functioning optimally-- mental, physical, and social well-being—not merely the absence of pain or illness.

So what system controls it ALL? The body is a self-healing, self-regulating intelligent organism. The brain and nervous system is the master controller, communicating and controlling EVERY cell, tissue, organ and all other systems in the body. It is very delicate and complex and protected by the skull and 24 moveable bones called vertebrae. Between each vertebrae are spaces allowing the nerves which are extensions of the spinal cord, to go out to connect every part in the body to the brain. Every part of our body from our head to our fingers and toes are connected because of our nervous system.

Why and Atlas adjustment? The Atlas is the first and most moveable bone in the spine located at the base of the skull. It weighs 2 ounces and supporting the head that weighs 9 to 16 or 17 pounds. If the Atlas is misaligned, it can cause interference or pressure on the nerves at the base of the skull. Blood supply to the brain passes through the openings in the atlas and misalignments of the atlas and spine can play a significant role in symptoms that just a few include headaches and migraines, asthma, TMJ, Trigeminal Neuralgia, neck and shoulder pain, and numbness in the arms or hands.

The spine can be likened to a chain and the Atlas is the top link. Or you can think of Rudolf leading the sleigh. Whichever way Rudolf turns, the rest of the reign deer have to follow.  Turn the top link of the chain and what happens to the rest of the link? They are all affected.  The head is meant to sit squarely on the Atlas and the Atlas should sit squarely on the cervical or neck portion of the spine. The delicate upper neck is the most moveable and least stable area of the entire spine. Misalignments can begin at birth during the delivery process, from the multiple falls and pressures put on the body as children grow and learn, from the chemical, physical and emotional stress we all experience in today's environment.
