Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease that is chronic and causes your immune system to attack the small joints in different areas of the body. Chronic inflammation appears which can cause damage to tissues, organs and joints. The Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research recently published a study on how specific chiropractic treatments combined with rehab exercises lead to improvements in a patient who suffered from chronic rheumatoid arthritis.

A case study highlighted a 54 year old woman who had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the past seven years. She was experiencing bilateral polyarthralgia, aches and pain in multiple joints, and her condition was more pronounced in the hands and fingers. Swelling was visible in these areas, as well as in the knees, toes and feet. She had a hard time walking and carrying objects and experienced stiffness throughout her body on a daily basis. She was treated with Prednisone and Methotrexate to manage her arthritis symptoms. When asked to describe her pain on a 1 to 10 scale, she described it as a constant nine.

A Nervous System Evaluation and X-rays were used to evaluate her situation. It was found that the patient suffered from subluxations in the spine with the most serious in the upper cervical area.

This study has found that an unhealthy forward head posture creates abnormal leverage and leads to the spine being out of alignment. This can create problems with normal respiration. Some patients lose as much as 30% of their vital lung capacity. Immunological control of the body can be triggered by lowered oxygen states.

Subluxation is the term used by medical professionals to refer to misalignment of the spine. This condition can result in an irritation or interference in the nerve pathways and affect the different organs and glands the nerves coordinate and communicate with. Subluxation can be a result of poor posture, falls, whiplash or birth trauma. Subluxation causes stress on the nerves, which results in issues with the immune system and other chronic illnesses, increasing the patient’s likeliness to develop a number of diseases.

Chronic or long-term subluxation is associated with chronic inflammation. It is never too early to get a spinal check-up. Subluxation frequently begins during the birth process.

Chiropractors who focus on wellness analyze the spine to look for possible subluxation in the area. Researchers found Chiropractic treatments lead to higher white blood cell count. Other studies have found that adjustments made in the upper cervical areas lead to improvements and normalization of immune functions in some patients.

The patient this study was treated for 36 visits during a four month period. At the end of the treatment period, the patient described her pain as being 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, reduced from the level of 9 at the beginning of her care. She was no longer taking Prednisone and Methotrexate. She was able to exercise, dance and go up and down stairs without experiencing pain. Her posture had improved as well as her cervical curvature. Improvements were also noted in her nervous system re-evaluation.
