Chiropractic does not treat any specific conditions or symptoms although, as patients, we go in for treatment typically because of particular symptoms or conditions we are experiencing. It is a science based, natural, non-invasive, safe and highly effective way to restore and optimize the body’s ability to heal.
Misalignment of the first vertebra of the spine, the Atlas or C1, can cause interference or abnormal nervous system transmission of information, blood flow and cerebral spinal fluid between the brain and the body. This condition can lead to common health complaints such as headaches, migraines, sinus issues, vertigo, and hypertension and even low back pain, to name just a few.
The Atlas vertebra is at the very top of the spine, a 2 ounce bone that holds the weight of the head, 10 to 15 pounds. This delicate 2 ounce bone is the most movable bone in the spine allowing the head its range of motion. This area is highly susceptible to injury caused from physical, chemical, emotional or environmental stress or a combination of these stressors that may be affecting a person beyond the body’s ability to cope. Trauma or injury can begin during the birth process or from falls, whiplash, sports, repetitive motions, and long periods of inactivity, or constantly looking down to read, play video games.
The Atlas, according to Grey’s Book of Anatomy, controls the functions of the head and neck providing the primary nerve supply from the control centers in the brain. Misalignments or “subluxations” in this area can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, limited range of movement, and proper blood flow to the brain. The Atlas, sitting at the base of the skull, is like the top link in a chain, affecting all other links below it.
Many persons who experience debilitating headaches and migraines commonly complain of feeling pressure or throbbing in the neck, head or behind the eyes. Migraines are often preceded by neck pain and an “aura” that can alter vision and hearing. They can last from a few hours to a few days and cause nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound.
Atlas Orthogonal upper cervical specialists have been changing lives since the 1960’s when Dr. Roy Sweat developed the precision instrument to very gently restore structural integrity to the Atlas, after many years of extensive research. The adjustment, with this percussion instrument, is so gentle that patients sometimes don’t believe an adjustment has really taken place until their discomfort has been relieved and their function has improved.
